Sleep Myths
Do people often offer you advice that you just aren’t sure about? There are a lot of old myths out there that affect baby sleep. Here are a few sleep myths you may have heard and the truth!
Myth: Formula fed babies sleep better than breastfed babies.
Truth: False! Although it is true that formula contains more fat it also requires the metabolism to work harder making the baby hungry at a similar time as breast milk! The method that you choose to feed your child should not impact their ability to sleep! Fed is best
Myth: Baby cereal will help my baby sleep through the night.
Truth: False! Yes, cereal will fill your baby up, but sleep is not all about caloric intake. To have a baby sleep successfully through the night they first must learn how to link sleep cycles on their own. Also being over-full can actually cause you to wake sooner due to your metabolism working much harder! Cereal is great when baby is ready for substance but most likely will not help your baby sleep through the night.
Myth: You should never let baby fall asleep in your arms.
Truth: False! Snuggling your baby is one of the best parts of the newborn phase and it will not cause your child to have sleep associations! Just make sure you fit in some crib practice, and if you’re worried schedule a consultation and we can help you find the right balance!
Myth: Babies sleep better on their stomachs.
Truth: False! Back is best, always. AAP has found that the risk of SIDS is reduced when baby sleeps on his or her back. Stomach sleep won’t lengthen night time rest.
Myth: If you overtire your baby, he or she will sleep more at night.
Truth: False! An overtired baby will actually sleep worse at night! Their stress hormones from over exhaustion will make it difficult for baby to fall asleep on their own and link sleep cycles.
